Centenary of RMC Duntroon 1911-2011 $1

In 2001, the Royal Military College (RMC) at Duntroon celebrating 100 years of preparing officers for services in Australia's permanent military forces. Following Colonel William Throsby Bridges 1908 report on the Minister of Defence on the operation of military colleges in the United States, Britain and Canada, Bridges set about establishing the RMC on a former sheep station near Canberra named "Duntroon". The first buildings were constructed by mid-1911, and on 27 June the Governor-General, Lord Dudley, officially opened the RMC. Its first commandant was Brigadier-General William Throsby Bridges, as he was by then known, and under his eye the initial 32 Australians and 10 New Zealanders began their training.

The couple met in 2001 while studying art history at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. Westminster Abbey has been the scene of many royal occasions including the weddings of Prince William's grandmother, the Queen in 1947 and his great-grandmother, the late Queen Mother in 1923.

Soprano Dame Nellie Melba, Australia first international celebrity, was born Helen Porter Mitchell 150 years ago in Richmond, Melbourne. After making her European debut in 1887 she was feted throughout Europe and America until her retirement in the late 1920s. Melba's repertoire included many rolse, the most famous bing Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme. She moved in high society and performed for many of the royal heads of Europe, including the Tsar, Emperor Franz Joseph and Queen Victoria. Nellie Melba died in Sydney in 1931 and is buried in Lilydale cemetary (Melbourne), nor far from her beloved Coombe Cottage, the Coldstream property she purchased in 1909.

The Queen sat for Brian Dunlop at Buckingham Palace to commemorate the sesquicentenary of the State of Victoria in 1984. Artist and entertainer Rolf Harris's affectionalte portrait was painted as a celebration of the Queen's 80th birthday in 2006.

The Rabbit is the forth sign in the zodiac following the Rat, Ox and Tiger. The race for a place in the zodiac, the Rabbit crossed the river by nimbly jumping from stone to stone. Halfway across, it lost its footing but managed to grab hold of a floating log which carried it to the bank. Unbeknown to the Rabbit, the the kind Dragon flying above has seen it clinging to the log and gave a puff of breath pushing the log to shore. Rabbits are known to be private, a little introverted and dislike being the centre of attention in any situation. They are friendly and enjoy company, are keen observers and intelligent. Rabbits are also artistic particularly enjoying painting and music.

From humble beginnings in 1882, the Ashes has been regularly contested by Australia and England, becoming a celebrated highlight of the Test cricket calender. In 2010-11, the battle for the Ashes will be waged for the 66th time, the first match taking place in Brisbane from 25 November and the last in Sydney from 3 January. The legendary Don Bradman has made more runs that any other player in the history of the Ashes, making 974 runs in 1930. The "beggy green" of the all-time cricket great features on one stamp design on this commemorative cover, the Australian floral emblem on the other.

The race that stopped the entire nation, for 3 minutes only of course.

In 1930, Phar Lap galloped home to easy victory in the Melbourne Cup, with Jockey Jim Pike in the saddle. The big chestnut was a symbol of hope for a nation feeling the bite of the Great Depression. Of his 51 starts, Pahr Lap had 37 wins, three second places and two thirds, and in his 21 races during 1930 he was beaten only twice. The revered Phar Lap survived an attempt on his life in the week prior to his Melbourne Cup win, but sadly his career was cut short when he died in suspicious circumstances following his win in the 1932 Agua Calientic Handicap, billed as the world's richest horse race. So popular and mythologised was Phar Lap that his heart now rests in the National Museum of Australia, his hide in Melbourne Museum and his skeleton in New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa.

Between 1951 and 1972, 287,000 young Australian men were called up for servicein the Navy, Army and Air Force. A total of 212 National Servicemen died on active service - two in Borneo and 210 in Vietnam. In 2002 the National Servicemen's Association of Australia (HSAA) and the Australian War Memorial (AWM) agreed that a National Service Memorial be built at the AWM in Canberra. Designde by archects Johnson Pilton Walker, the memorial is a dignified and stricking tribute to all national Servicemen. On 8 September 2010 the National Service Memorial was dedicated by the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Her Excecellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC.

Girl Guides Australia is celebrating its Centenary - one hundred years of changing lives - from September 2009 to February 2011. In Australia, Guiding began as early as 1909 but it wasn't until 1926 that the Federal Council of the Girl Guides Associates of Australia was formed. In 1928 Australia became a foundation member of the newly formed World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Over a million Australian women have been or are still active Guides and the organisation continues to challenge members with a program that develops skill in leadership and teamwork to enable girls and young women to be their best.

On 20 August 1860, the Burke and Wills expedition left Melbourne for the Gulf of Carpentaria. While the explorers reached the Gulf, the expedition ended in tragedy. In June 1861 the two men died on Cooper's Creek. Following their deaths, Burke and Wills were lauded as heroes, and they are still remembered today.

Australia Remembers 20 Cents - Lost Soldiers of Fromelles

The bloodiest day in Australian military history, and some claim the most tragic event in Australia's history, occurred on the plains of Flanders on 19 July 1916. The battle of Fromelles witnessed more than 1,900 Australian deaths, over 3,100 wounded and 470 captured. the Australian toll at Fromelles was such that over 1,000 casualties recovered after the war were unable to be identified and are buried as unknown soldiers in war cemeteries in the area. Some 410 of these casualties are buried in the VC Corner Australian Cemetery, where those who have no identified grave are commemorated on the cemetery's screen walls. Ninety-two years after the battle, a mass grave of 250 British and Australian soldiers was discovered near Pheasant Wood. All but one of the soldiers have now been re-interred in the new Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery, with the final burial to take place at a dedication ceremony on the 94th anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July 2010.

Australian Commonwealth Coinage 1910-2010 $1

In 1910, Australia issued coinage in its own right as legal tender for the entire country. The first coin issued comprises the florin, shilling, sixpence and threepence; the penny and halfpenny were released the following year. The coins were produced by the Royal Mint in London. King Edward Vll featured on the obverse of all denominations, the 1908 Australian coat of arms on the reverse. The King Edward portrait was engraved by George William de Saulles. Edward died soon after the first shipment of coins reached Australia, and his image was replaced by that of his successor, George V, and the 1911 coins.

The courageous Tiger, the third sign in the Chinese zodiac, is associated with fearlessness, generosity, authority and unpredictability. According to legend, the Jade Emperor of Heaven called for a contest to invent a way of measuring time. All the animals of the kingdom were invited to cross a swiftly flowing river and reach a designated spot on the opposite bank. The first 12 would gain a permanent place in the zodiac. The Tiger earned third place by daringly running across the backs of the other animals, reaching the river bank after the cunning Rat and the Ox.

However despite saying this, I buy them in pairs and hopefully one day I will resell them for a small profit. That will most likely happen when I am retiring. Former convict Isaac Nichols was appointed the country’s first postmaster on 25 April 1809. From an office in his Sydney home he took charge of all mail in Sydney, and put an end to people fraudulently obtaining letters and parcels from incoming ships. According to Governor Macquarie, Nichols was “a most zealous, active and useful man”. Nichols continued as postmaster until his death in 1819.

Laozi was a prominent thinker in ancient China, who on becoming discouraged with the political climate headed towards the wilderness on his faithful Ox. Before he left he was asked to write down his knowledge. Sitting on his Ox, Laozi wrote Daode jing, the most important book in Taoism.

The coronation of Queen Elizabeth ll took place on 2 June 1953. Hundreds of thousands of people descended upon London for the coronation to watch the Queen ride from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the ornate State or ‘Glass Coach’, preceded by a long processing. During the coronation ceremony, conducted by Archbishop of Canterbury, Elizabeth swore the coronation oath. She was then consecrated and crowned with the St Edward’s Crown – at which point trumpets sounded, the Abbey bells pealed, and guns at the Tower of London saluted. Across Britain and the Commonwealth bonfires were lit and street parties were held to celebrate the new monarch’s coronation.

100 Years of Service $1 coin The Australian Army was formed on 1 March 1901 when the naval and military forces of each state were transformed on the control of the Commonwealth of Australia. Major General Sir Edward ‘Curly’ Hutton was chosen to head the Commonwealth forces. The new Australian Army’s first operational activity occurred in the Boer War and the first full-time force, the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), was formed in 1914 after outbreak of World War I. Australia’s first regular army, supplemented by the Citizen Military Force, was formed after World War II. Today the Army’s mission is “to serve the Nation by providing land forces to promote the security of Australia and protect its people and interests”

The cover shows the 13th Australian Light Horse in France 1918. The two stamps feature hoistorical and contemporary image of the Army. These include, on the historical stamp, scenes of the Army’s activities in World War II. The main image on the stamp illustrating the contemporary army is Trooper Jon Church in Rwanda in 1995 during a United Nations peacekeeping exercise. Trooper Church was tragically killed just a year later in the Townsville Black Hawk accident. The background features officers at Marangoroo Barracks, Lithgow NSW in 1997.

On 3 September 1939 Australians leant that their country was at war. During the next six years men and women were called upon to serve their country in difference ways. People’s experience of the war varied widely. It was particularly difficult for prisoners of war. Some 15,000 Australians were amongst the Allied troops who were taken prisoner by the Japanese at the surrender of Singapore on 15 February 1942. They were used as working parties in Singapore and later dispatched to other parts of the Japanese empire. In all, one in three died in captivity of hardship, disease, malnutrition or harsh treatment. The medical officers, on whom life depended, were confronted by harrowing responsibilities. The most famous of them is Weary Dunlop.
